Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need a diagnosis to start therapy?

Nope! A formal diagnosis is not required to begin therapy at Bay Psychology. Many families reach out simply because they’ve noticed their child is struggling emotionally, socially, or academically. We’re happy to meet your child exactly where they are, and we can help guide you if an evaluation is recommended.

What does the first session look like?

What concerns or diagnoses do you treat?

We commonly support children and teens with:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • Learning differences
  • Emotion regulation challenges
  • Executive functioning difficulties
  • Social skill challenges
  • OCD
  • Body image and eating concerns

If you’re unsure whether we’re the right fit, please reach out — we’re always happy to talk it through with you.

How involved will parents be?

We see parents as an essential part of the support team. Depending on your child’s age and needs, sessions may include parent check-ins, family sessions, or parent coaching. We value collaboration and will keep communication open and ongoing.

Do you accept insurance?

Bay Psychology is an out-of-network practice. We provide superbills upon request that you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. If you have questions about fees, payment options, or reimbursement, we’re always happy to talk with you. You can learn a bit more here.

How do we get started?

What is the difference between therapy and an evaluation?

Therapy focuses on building coping skills, emotional understanding, regulation, and resilience over time.

Evaluations are comprehensive assessments involving a variety of information sources such as parent and/or child surveys and individual testing of thinking, social skills and academics that provide clarity around diagnoses, learning profiles, strengths, and areas of support. When discussing the evaluation process with children it is helpful to avoid the word “test” and instead refer to the appointments as including learning activities and “brain games” involving puzzles and pictures.

Some families benefit from one, others from both.

How do I know which clinician will be the best fit?

At Bay, connection is everything. We take a thoughtful, collaborative approach to matching families with the clinician who best aligns with their child’s needs, personality, and goals. If at any point the fit doesn’t feel quite right, we welcome that feedback and will work with you to adjust.

Is my child’s struggle “big enough” for therapy?

If you’re wondering whether to reach out, that’s usually a sign it’s worth exploring. You don’t need a diagnosis or a crisis to come to Bay. We support kids through both big challenges and everyday struggles.

What if my child is shy, anxious, or doesn’t want to come to therapy?

That’s completely okay — and very common. We move at your child’s pace and never force conversation or sharing before they’re ready. Our goal is to build trust first and create a space where your child feels safe, seen, and in control.

How do you support neurodivergent kids?

We use a neuroaffirming, strengths-based approach that honors each child’s unique brain, sensory needs, and communication style. We focus on building skills, confidence, and self-understanding — not on “fixing” who they are.

How long will it take to see progress?

Every child and family is different. Some notice small shifts within a few sessions, while for others it takes more time. Progress depends on many factors, including goals, consistency, and what’s happening in your child’s world. We’ll check in regularly along the way and adjust as needed.
